Summer 7s

Summer 7s

Olympic Rugby, also known as Rugby Sevens, is a faster version of the game played with

  • 7 players to a side
  • 7 minutes a half
  • Full size rugby pitch (Middle School is a smaller field)

The youth sevens competition in Illinois is a series of festival events with a champion at each event, culminating in a state championship event seeded based on the results of the preliminary tournaments.

Illinois Rugby’s Summer 7s State Championships are held annually at the end of July. Competition is open to Boys High School, Girls High School and Middle School clubs in Illinois.

To compete for the state championship title, Boys High School sevens teams are required to participate in one of the state qualifying tournaments.

Girls High School and Middle School sevens team can enter directly in the state championship tournament without prequalifying at another tournament but are encouraged to compete in other tournaments if offered.

The Rugby Illinois Sevens State Championships play the same format used in the Olympic Games and gives Illinois rugby clubs a good opportunity to promote and explain sevens rugby to friends and other residents in their communities.
