High school level rugby has been played in Illinois continuously since 1998, and it is stronger than ever. There are opportunities for both boys and girls to play year-round, from the spring championship season to the summer sevens series and select side tours to the fall “friendly” developmental season.

Boys High School Rugby

Boys high school clubs play a competitive season in the spring with multiple divisions, culminating in the state championships, as well as a fall developmental season of friendly matches.

Girls High School Rugby

Girls high school clubs play a competitive season in the spring, culminating in the state championships, as well as a fall season of friendly matches for clubs that are unable to compete in the spring or that compete in both seasons.

Boys High School Rugby

Boys high school rugby began in Illinois in 1998 and continues to flourish! With clubs being added all the time, it’s always an exciting season.

Boys high school clubs play a competitive season in the spring with multiple divisions, culminating in the state championships. There is also a fall developmental season of friendly matches and a summer Olympic sevens season.

Division 1

Division 1 is made up of teams seeking the highest level of competition.

Division 1A clubs field both varsity and junior varsity sides, while Division 1AA clubs are highly competetive but can not consistently field a JV side.

Division 2

Comprised of competitive clubs that must consistently rely on underclassmen for varsity

Small Club

Includes new, emerging or rebuilding clubs with consistently low or generally inconsistent numbers of players.

Freshman/Sophomore

The boys U17 Freshman/Sophomore division is for high school freshman and sophomore players that turn 17 on or after September 1 prior to the fall and spring seasons. This is a competitive division for schools and clubs with enough frosh/soph players to form a complete team.

In addition, freshman and sophomore U16 players from any club may play on combined sides in festival-style matches at the middle school festivals, similar to pick-up games except being scheduled and featuring trained coaches, trainers, and

Girls youth and high school rugby is flourishing in Illinois! Girls high school rugby in Illinois began in 2002, and with clubs being added all the time, it’s always an exciting season.
