In 2022, Diana and Jim Coyne ’78 generously supported Fenwick High School’s acquisition of the Priory Campus. Jim’s passion for Fenwick is tied to a close friendship with his late classmate Michael Begg’78, who tragically passed away 40 years ago. Jim & Michael were Friar football teammates and continued their friendship as fellow Rugby players at John Carroll University. Jim, the Begg family, rugby teammates and friends forever remember Michael’s care for others, leadership, passion for rugby and team spirit. Fenwick introduced rugby as a team sport 12 years ago; Jim suggested an opportunity to remember Michael by naming Fenwick’s first annual Player of the Year Award in Michael Begg’s memory.
At a January 5th gathering, Fenwick President Fr. Peddicord, family, friends and classmates of Michael, as well as Fenwick Rugby Coach Bill Mahon, dedicated and presented the initial Michael E. Begg ’78 Player of the Year Award to Will Frech ’22. Will was a leader and high scorer throughout his four year Fenwick rugby career. Will now attends Purdue University, majoring in engineering and yes, playing rugby. With this award, Jim Coyne and the Begg family are thrilled to share the memory of MIchael’s dynamic personality and team spirit for rugby with Fenwick High School and future Fenwick rugby players.
